Thracian Wine Presentation Event

Thanks Thracian wine for having me and my friend at the Thracian Wine Presentation Event sometime back.

Bulgaria holds a special place in the European history of wine making and wine culture. The cult of the merry god of wine Dionysus (aka Bacchus) originated in ancient Thrace from where it eventually spread throughout the Hellenistic world.

Thracians considered wine a sacred medium to achieve unity with their gods. They preferred wine thick, aromatic and strong.

More than half of the gold wine cups discovered in the whole ancient world belong to the Thracians. Many of them are decorated with the figure of god Dionysus. This no doubt highly developed wine culture is represented by many other artifacts found all over Bulgaria: votive plates, bas-reliefs, and vessels and coins decorated with vine and wine motifs.

It seems that the cultivation of some of the oldest native grape varieties – such as Pamid, Red Misket, Dimiat, Gamza, Mavrud and Broad-leaved Vine of Melnik – dates back to Thracian times.
