Opel Astra Innovation 5-Door Hatchback 2016 [Car Review]

Awarded the highly coveted title of Car of the Year 2016, the new Opel Astra is Opel's new flagship compact with premium interior design, ergonomic seats all-new engines and class-leading technologies. The new Opel Astra 5 Door hatchback is definitely unique in its own class.

Shaun (www.shaun-owyeong.blogspot.sg) and I were really excited when we found out that we will be test-driving and reviewing the new Opel Astra.

Let us take you on a tour through photos and video of what the Opel Astra is all about!
Here’s the shot of the Astra’s chrome grille and sleek head lamps. Check out the beautifully integrated fog lights.

The car features a Inline 3 and DOHC valve.  It has a 6 Speed Automatic transmission and can reach up to 200 km/h. Acceleration (0-100 km/h) is 12.7 seconds.

Opel also offers the Astra 1.4 Turbo model which can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 9 seconds!

Despite having just a 1L engine, this Astra is still pretty fast when picking up at the start, thanks to the Turbo engine! When cruising at 100-110 km/h, the car feels very stable and I almost couldn't feel that I'm already at 100 km/h.

The car is very much a lifestyle car that will suit anyone!

The Daytime Running Lights of the New Opel Astra has a style of its own.

Sporting here is a 17" Alloy wheel which is the same for the 1.4 Turbo Hatch.

Unique Opel ‘wing’ signature LED Rear Lights

They are really stylish and I really like the back view of this car..

Here's the interior of the car which is all-black with a tinge of chrome around, giving the car a sense of elegance!

Controls on the steering are convenient and straightforward.

Cruise control and speed limit can be set on the left side and the audio functions on the right.

Turn on and off the engine with the Start/Stop Button.

Controls at the side of the driver's door are pretty standard.

Side mirrors can be folded in with just a press of a button.

The Astra is tailor-made to put you at ease. Its premium interior effectively creates a new category in the compact car class. The electronic dual zone climate control allows the passenger and the driver to control the air-con temperature on their own. This is actually really smart! For example, drivers may prefer the air-conditioning to be colder, but the passenger on the side may not want the aircon to be too cold, so the passenger can simply adjust the the settings to their liking.

Dials of the New Opel Astra are really sporty with the chrome rims around it! It also has a white light as a backdrop of the speedometer in which you can adjust the brightness accordingly.

The left scroller allows you to adjust the brightness of the speedometer and it sychronises with the brightness of the LCD screen on the dashboard. The right scroller on the other hand, allows you to adjust the height level of the front beam. And on the extreme right end of this dashboard is the control for lights and fog lamps.

The automatic gearbox has a Manual Mode option.  Switching gears and reversing is simple and effortless.

The central console is kept simple with a power socket, parking brake and two cup-holders (shown below) that are concealable when you wanna keep things neat and tidy. Yes.. the flap showing a ((P)) is a parking brake, or so called hand-brake. We no longer have a hand-brake jutting out from the corner of the central console, hence creating more space between the driver and the passenger. :)

There is also a USB Port where you can charge your phone and an auxiliary port for other purposes in the compartment under the arm-rest between the driver and the passenger.

Indoor lighting controls at the top of the car.

Mirror with lighting for both driver and passenger.

Glover compartment in front of the passenger seat.

Lighting for the passengers at the back.

The rear is spacious with alot of leg room for the passengers.

There's an arm-rest when you need one!

With the boot's low sill, you'll be loading the Astra in no time. And, you can take full advantage of its generous storage space.

From this angle, you can see its pretty deep and spacious.

Rear seats can be folded down easily to create more space for the boot.

So is the left side of the rear seats.

And here's a full-fledge flat down of the rear seats.
There you go.. you can put a cupboard in! Lol~!

The video below shows the car is able to go High-Beam but yet goes Glare-Free at the same time.

The above video shows the Opel Eye Safety System which is pretty impressive and allows driver to react in time when needed.

To sum it up, we love the overall aesthetics of the car, the First-in-class IntelliLux LED® Matrix headlights which give you high-beam visibility without disturbing other drivers and the innovative driver assistance system which delivers a safer, stress-free driving experience. Not forgetting to mention with only 1-litre engine, the car is extremely powerful too! In addition, we also like the Lane-Assist and Opel Eye Safety System, they will alert you when you come too close to a potential collision. The Opel Eye Safety System is also able to detect the speed limit signs on the road and alert you when you're 20 km/h above the speed limit. For instance, the speed limit is 90 km/h, and you hit the speed at 110 km/h, the car will start beeping and cause you to slow down naturally. This is really helpful to control the speed of the car.

Thumbs up for the New Opel Astra!
