Last night (29 Dec 2011), I got a rare opportunities to meet up with the Lighting Designers, Mr Milton Arnold (Technical Manager of Lighting) and Mr George Panait (Assistant Technical Manager of Lighting) for Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2012! It was certatinly my pleasure meeting up with them and hearing from them on their preparation for this year show on 31 Dec 2011. They said they hope Singaporean and visitors to the bay will like their work!!! According to them, the preparation for the countdown celebration started since September and this year would be a spectacular sight with 20,000 Floating Wishing Spheres, transforming the bay into an art installation of Hope and Light. Sky Lantern in Taiwan- During the night of lantern festival, many people in Taiwan will fly the sky lantern by writing their wishes on the paper lantern and pray their wishes come true. Long time ago, people thought the lantern will fly up to the heaven. The god of heaven will receive their messages and will give them blessing. The sky lantern probably was invented before Late Han Dynasty. A prime minister Kung-Ming used sky lantern for military liaison purpose during Three Kingdom epoch (221A.D.). Some people still call the sky lantern as Kung-Ming lantern. There is a story for this custom. Once a village was attacked by the private. Did you notice the white sphere at the Marina Bay? Yes these are the Wishing Sphere which was collected from various Wishing Stations across Singapore over the month for Marina Bay Singapore Countdown Celebration (31 Dec 2011)!!! This year 20,000 of these wishing sphere, all marked with hand-written wishes made by Singaporean and Visitors will floated on the water and become a visual arts installation at Marina Bay- the Bay of Hope and Light. Yesterday evening (20 Dec 2011), there was a Wishing Sphere activities with the VWOs (Voluntary Welfare Organisations)!!! There were elderly from Moral SAC (MacPherson), Moral NL (Kaki Bukit). Also children & parents from Hougang Sheng Hong FSC and Moral FSC (Bedok North). Each group consists of about 30-40 pax. Several Wishing Spheres were passed around for them to pen their wishes.
