Singapore Dancer Wins 5th Gatsby Dance Competition Regional Finals

Singapore’s champion, Amin Alifin, beat out tough competition from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other regional countries to emerge Asia’s Champion

SINGAPORE, March 2013 – Singapore’s representative in the 5th GATSBY Dance Competition Regional Finals beat out stiff competition to be crowned Regional Champion on 2 March, proving that Singapore’s street dancers are well on their way to making an impact on regional stage!

Amin Alifin, otherwise known as Sir Waackalot, trumped the defending champions from Japan and group finalists from countries like Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan to be awarded the No.1 Dancer in Asia with his uniquely creative and heart-stopping combination of waacking, ballet, street jazz, and other dance forms! Japan’s female duo team, Ayaka and Konami, took home the second prize while Indonesia’s team, Return Dance, won the Styling Award.

“Although I’m shocked beyond shocked that I actually won, I feel blessed and thankful to be given such an opportunity,” said Amin, who was one of the only two solo finalists in the competition, and the first Singaporean to clinch this prestigious award. In addition to a cash prize of ¥500,000 (approx. SGD 6,600), he will be travelling on an all-expenses paid Asia Dance Exchange Tour to any one of the eight participating countries in the 5th GATSBY Dance Competition.

Mr Hiroyuki Mitsuoka, Director of Mandom Corp. (Singapore) Pte Ltd that organises the annual GATSBY Dance Competition, said: “We are extremely pleased and proud of Amin’s triumph. As one of the only two solo finalists, he faced very tough competition and pressure, but overcame that to perform a truly astonishing dance routine. We hope that his win in the 5th GATSBY Dance Competition will spur on other Singaporean dancers to compete at a regional level and raise the local street dance scene further.”
